The site is remote. The system is not.

A mine produces drilling, fleet and maintenance data over links that drop. The platforms receiving that data answer to rules about where it may sit.

What we see

  • Between the concentrator, the truck fleet and head office, three generations of systems coexist. The oldest one is usually the one holding production together.
  • Links to remote sites go down. An architecture that assumes a permanent connection to the cloud eventually stops something on the ground.
  • Joint ventures require geological and financial data to be shared with partners governed by different law. That question belongs at signature, not afterwards.

The deposit is local. The cloud is not.

Continuity on remote sites

A platform outage translates into tonnes not extracted. The architecture has to stay usable while the satellite link is unavailable.

Separation of domains

Controllers and process systems do not follow the patching rhythm of business servers. Making them coexist calls for network zones declared in advance rather than an exception recorded after an incident.

Reserve data

Resource estimates and drilling results carry market value. Where they are stored, and which law applies to the host, belong in the file alongside access control.

Azure landing zone written as code

Subscriptions, networking, logging and policy are defined as Infrastructure-as-Code and kept under version control. Rebuilding an environment starts from the repository, not from one team’s recollection.

AI agents on maintenance data

Production within eight weeks on a bounded scope: service history, incident reports, equipment documentation. The scope is fixed before we start and does not widen along the way.

Microsoft 365 Copilot at scale

The programme begins with SharePoint and shared-space permissions, not with licence purchase. Without that groundwork, the tool makes visible whatever the organisation had left open.

WIN TO LUX

Migration from Windows Server to Linux and from Active Directory to FreeIPA, in waves, each reversible until the next one starts. It applies where licence cost or a sovereignty requirement makes the dependency unmanageable.

Law 25 (Quebec), section 17

Since September 2023, any transfer of personal information outside Quebec requires a documented assessment of the legal regime of the receiving state. For an operator hosted with a US provider, that assessment is a CLOUD Act risk analysis.

CLOUD Act

A company subject to US law can be compelled to produce data it holds, regardless of where the server physically sits. A data centre in Quebec City run by a US company remains within that reach.

PIPEDA

The Canadian federal framework applies to personal information handled in the course of commercial activity. It concerns mining companies whose operations extend beyond Quebec.
